DEVELOPMENT AND PRINCIPLES OF EDITING: analysis of editing in a five minute sequence

The history and development of film.
The first type of editing was getting scissors and cutting the film and then sticking it back together. Or just pausing the camera and start filming again on the next shot.

The establishing shot is of every sitting and laying on the beach. This shot is show the audience that that this scenes location is on a beach. This helps use know and break down where we are in the film.

They use the 180 rule perfectly in the first few shots. This make it's not confusing and easy to follow for the viewer. This was also a shot-reverse-shot when the two characters were speaking.

Match cuts on action are when there is two shots that match together but shows what's happening from different angles. There is a match on action at 1.56 this works really well because in the 1st shot it's showing us the attack from above and in the 2nd shot it is showing us the attack from under the water. Match cut on action are part of the continuity to make sure the audience know whats happening in the shots and that they don't get confused.

At 0.06 there is a eyeline match, eyeline matchs are used to show you what the character is looking at and to put you in to there shoes. This eyeline match shows a character looking over somebody's shoulder in to the sea.

Screen time is how long the film/clip plays for, this clip of JAWS plays for 3:23. This is a normal screen time for a scene like this. This also shows the viewer that it doesn't take long for the shark 'JAWS' to attack.

At 0.08 there is a point of view (POV) , POV shots are used to show what the character is looking at and it also puts the viewer in to their shoes.

Reactions shots are to show the reaction of what happen in the previous shot. In this clip there is a reaction shot at 0.12 this gives the viewer a idea what the character is thinking.

Close ups are to show the emotions of a character face or close up of a object to show it in more detail, at 1.30 there is a close up to showing the face of one of the characters when the two charters were having a light saber fight.

There are some techniques that help with the story line. Such as a montage that is a series of shots put together to suggest passage of time. Jump cuts make the film feel like your jumped forward in time.

Multiple points of view is where something is happening in a scene involving multiple characters. We will see what is happening with one character and then the camera will cut to another character followed by another character if there is another and so on. It shows a scene from the point of view of all the characters involved.

Providing and withholding information is when you try make the narrative more dramatic by giving the audience more information or taking away information. a great example of the two is in '2 Drams', 'One Is Murder' she wrote in which at the start of ever show you see someone being killed or someone planning to kill someone and the dramatic question is will Jessica find out who did in. It also gives a dramatic irony because the audience knows who did it. the other show which does the opposite is diagnosis murder, in this show it doesn't show you who killed the person rather it just shows you the person dead and you have to find out along with the characters who did. they are both crime programs but the fact one provided you information creates a different emotion from the audience as it creates frustration because you know what happened. in contrast the other show withholding it keeps the audience on the edge of there seat.
